Weekend Song, by WHOAA, is a summer bop unlike any other.
The duo's summer anthem pays homage to the Atlanta bass scene while still introducing their unique sound to the world.
The beauty of music, more than any other art, is that there is a finite amount of keys, but an infinite amount of sounds and patterns that can be combined to create a musical experience. When you add in a touch of creativity and imagination, you create a song that captures multiple periods in time and invokes the emotion people need. With the genre-bending retro fusion group, WHOAA (When Hearts Open and Attract), and their record, “Weekend Song (Hey DJ)”, you have just that.
Part funk, part pop, and a whole heap of soul, the song borrows from both of the group’s experiences and reintroduces it to a newer time. Set to be released July 1, 2022, the song is a nod to a time in the 90s when skating rings and good vibes dominated the radio.
Hailing from both Cincinnati and Atlanta, the duo WHOAA comprises vocalists Ashley Ring and Dolla, both of whom have had successful musical careers prior to partnering up in 2015. An amalgam of their lives, the group’s music marries both members’ musical loves together, fusing both rap, R&B, and funk successfully. Weekend Song, produced by Atlanta music producer Mr Hanky, builds on the Atlanta cultural legacy of bass music that became popular in the late 80s and early 90s and reintroduces it to a different time and audience. Atlanta music legend, DJ Jelly, whose known as the Stamp of Approval, has spoken positively about the group’s sound.
When asked what was the aim of the record, Dolla simply says, “For me, the song we did has the quintessential Atlanta skate vibe.”
Besides being influenced by Atlanta bass rappers like Kilo Ali and Raheem the Dream, the duo also points to the sounds of artists like Egyptian Lover and Paul Hardcastle, both of whom the group sample on their songs, “Freak Song” and Weekend Song on their record. Grammy-winning artist Paul Hardcastle’s Rain Forest song serves as the perfect background for the duo’s feel-good vibe and even garnered Hardcastle’s blessings on the sample usage.
Serving as the first single from the group’s upcoming project, The Legendary Bop, The Weekend Song comes right on the heels of the group’s recent single, “Saturday Fun”, which debuted on MTV’s Spankin New segment last week.
“Saturday fun was a whole different sound, style and image. This is here to show duality and show they can do different things comfortably, “says Ashley.
