Towa Bird is an American Hero Wading Through the Murky Water of Fame.
Musician Towa Bird is carrying her musical legacy like only a hero can.
As boundless as the world is, most people especially artists, tend to traverse the world of familiarity instead, sticking to the sounds and visuals that require the least amount of experimentation. While they stay in the worlds they know, others like Towa Bird, an eclectic guitarist, and musician, traverse music’s landscape and experiment with everything from the guitar to the sounds of her own instrument. Raised overseas and recently relocated to the United States, she grew up being influenced by classic rock artists like the Beatles, the Who, and guitarist Jimi Hendrix. Now at the helm of her own career as a recent signee with Interscope Records, her main goal is to give her fans a look at what her life looks like as an American Hero.
“A lot of the songs on this album were written in this transitionary period of my life moving from the UK to the US. I was coming to terms with being an immigrant and also my relationship with my girlfriend who is American and our relationship. You’ll see a lot of vulnerability and heart which is the opposite of being a hero. It’s ironic.”
Towa’s debut album, American Hero, is set to be released this fall. Her most recent singles, “Wildheart” and “This Isn’t Me” showcase the album’s diverse direction as she aims to create what she refers to as a fun project. When asked about what fans can expect from her work, Towa stated, “The album is fun, high tempo, dance songs that also display vulnerability”.
Wildheart, which was released in April of this year, blends a high-tempo rock-infused track with clever lyrics on Towa’s relationship, perfectly displaying her musicianship. Gifted as a guitarist, Towa’s lyrical skill is equally as pronounced. Out of all her singles however, she looks at This Isn’t Me as the standout track for her upcoming album and one of the best reflections of who she is as an artist.
Towa’s identity as a queer woman remains a point of pride for her as an artist and sits right in the heart of her musical message. For those who haven’t heard her music yet, be sure to visit her YouTube channel and check out her Spotify.
