For Rap Duo, Cashus King and Jeff Johnson II, Malcolm's Theme is the charm.
The fourth installment of the duo's Malcolm X-Men series, Malcolm's Theme is a light and welcoming addition to their work.,
2024 marked the 99 anniversary of international freedom fighter Malcolm X and the 59th anniversary of his assassination. In the decades since many have attempted to pay homage to his legacy and for California and DMV emcees Cashus King and Jeff Johnson II, this is their way of keeping his words and life alive.
Their newest single, “Malcolm’s Theme” will be released on Juneteenth, adding another chapter to the duo’s prolific release calendar. Produced by Italian beatmaker, Mr Nobody, with scratches and cuts from DJ Jon Doe and notable emcee and producer, Yamin Semali, the song’s calm tone allows their distinctive voices and charged lyrics to pierce through.
Friends and business partners for a decade plus, the two began rhyming alongside each other in 2020. Their first official release, “Glory” branded their partnership under the group name, Malcolm X-Men, and from there they started releasing singles to address the issues affecting the black community, from gang violence to respectability politics, through their unique lens.
In 2023, they continued their tradition, releasing the introspective single, “Cheshire Cat”, during Black History Month. A coded reference to the Alice and Wonderland story, the song provided the type of advice and rebuke that we’ve come to expect from our elders and ancestors.
That same year they followed up the momentum with the Malcolm X Megablend, a collection of themed songs condensed for listeners.
Check out their singles, “The Glory”, “Cheshire Cat”, and their most recent megablend, The Malcolm X Blend.
“The song’s calm tone allows their distinctive voices and charged lyrics to pierce through.” Nice read, will definitely check them out!
